The U.S. government is giving you money. What will YOU do with your economic stimulus check? Do you plan to use your rebate to pay off debt or save it for times of uncertainty? Although your first reaction may be to pay down debt, did you know that you could put your rebate toward your retirement savings? Or you can help your children or grandchildren by funding a college savings plan. Let me share a few ways you can spend your rebate:
- Save it as an emergency fund or put it into your savings account:
- Keep at least $500 in your checking or savings account. Absolutely everyone needs at least $500 in the bank. Now is the time to build up your emergency savings.
- Save the money for your retirement:
- Fund your IRA. Make your 2008 IRA contribution now. Remember, the journey toward your retirement years starts with the first $100 and each subsequent contribution.
