Helpful Hints for Perennial Plants

Location! Location! Location!
Perennial plants will come back year after year if you just give them a fighting chance. Most perennials prefer fertile well-drained soil with at least 8 hours of direct sunlight. If you have other conditions, like wet soil, look for a specialty plant solution.

Soil Preparation
Now is the time to make a stand against the perennial weeds. Use a broad spectrum weed killer, wait the recommended replant time (usually 10-14 days), amend the soil with compost, grass clippings, or rock powders. Based on a pH soil test you may also want to add lime at the recommended rate. Rot-till or mulch heavily and plant through the mulch.

Paint with Bold Strokes
Plant in groups with a minimum of 3 plants per group. The smaller the plant the larger the group must be. For example: for blue mist shrub 3 in a group is fine. A grouping of columbine might be 7-9 plants. One coneflower here, and one coreopsis there and one rudbeckia way over there rarely results in the lushness desired in the garden

Feed the Soil and the Soil will feed the Plants
The long term solution to healthy plants is rich soil. Improve your soil by yearly additions of organic matter and rock powders. For a quick fix, synthetic fertilizers are acceptable. A single application of balanced fertilizer in spring should be sufficient. Slow release formulas are preferred.

Deadhead, Man
Removing spent flowers improves the appearance of the garden, encourages re-blooming later in the season and controls rampant reseeders.

Have Your ID Ready
Place identification tags near plants and make a map of the garden. When replacement plants are needed, even years in the future, the matching cultivar can be identified.

Mulch
Mulch is the hired gardener you always wanted. It reduces watering by conserving soil moisture; it suppresses weed germination and growth, provides winter protection and decomposes over time to improve soil fertility. Mulch is the garden time saver.
